Overview
Indigenous peoples in what is currently known as Canada are fighting to ensure the survival of their languages but partners and allies need to do more to remove systemic barriers towards this outcome (McIvor & Anisman, 2018).
In this presentation, Andrea shares what she has learned from her experiences over the last decade in working to create space for Indigenous language activists in higher education. She addresses:
- service responsibilities;
- ethical matters pertaining to publications;
- grant applications and presentations;
- speaking out in support of Indigenous knowledges;
- relationship-building with Indigenous researchers, students, communities and institutions;
- her own experiences with learning Indigenous languages.
The goal of the talk is to explore some of what has worked in Andrea’s context so that others might help to find ways to open up spaces for Indigenous language activists in their own settings.
